Reconnecting With God After a Spiritual Drift

Have you ever wondered about how close you are to God? Sometimes, life gets so busy that you might find yourself justifying why you’re not spending as much time with Him. Or maybe, you’re caught in a loop of rationalizing the reasons for your spiritual drift. Remember, it’s always possible to reconnect with God after a season of spiritual drift, no matter how long you’ve been away. Every moment is a new opportunity to find your way back and experience growth and healing.

There’s always a way to find your way back. Remember, spiritual drift isn’t your final chapter. The Christ your heart cherished is still with you. His promises for you haven’t gone anywhere. There are gentle paths to rekindle that initial love. Drift is just a temporary season—you can recover from it and find your way back on track.

A boat adrift on the ocean.

Drift occurs so subtly that we often don’t realize it until we’re completely off track, much like a ship gently drifting on the ocean. Each small drift gradually takes us further from our intended path.

What can you do to get reconnected?

Reconnect With His Love

God watched you come to Him and drift away, knowing you would. Remember, you belong to Him; nothing escapes His hand. He calls out daily while you’re away, and nothing stops His pursuit. You are His beloved, and His love is everlasting. He wants you to remember this from His word.

“I pray that you, being rooted and established in love… grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” Ephesians 3:17-18

Trust His love again without guilt or shame, as He died for that. There’s nothing to feel ashamed or guilty about. He’s calling your name. Come to Him. You’re established in His love.

Reconnect With Prayer

God understands you better than you do, even your heart. Share your thoughts and feelings with Him through prayer. Turn back to Him if you’ve strayed from His protection and presence, and speak openly. Pour your heart out to Him.

Jeremiah 29:12-13 says, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Remember, God always listens to you, no matter how you’re feeling. Reach out to Him with all your heart to reconnect with His presence. He knows exactly where you are spiritually, and rest assured, He will hear you and respond.

Reconnect With the Word

The word of God serves as your anchor, providing stability and hope. It’s the foundation upon which the entire universe, including worlds and all creation, is beautifully built. The Word of God is the most alive and vibrant book you’ll ever have the chance to read, continually inspiring and empowering you.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 tells us that the scripture is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness.” It goes on to say that this same Word equips you and completes you for every good work.

When you drift away from the Word, it’s like straying from the instruction manual for life. It breathes new life into those who might feel spiritually empty and awakens the soul to vibrant new life in Christ.

Jesus said in Matthew 24:25, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”

The Word of God is your precious key to discovering true clarity. Take another look at it with fresh, new eyes, and see things from His perspective—you might notice something you didn’t see before.

Reconnect With Church

The Body of Christ is truly unique and meaningful. There’s no other group on earth quite like His body. Jesus is preparing to return for His bride, the Church. He genuinely desires for you to be included in that wonderful promise.

Let me share a great scripture with you.

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” – I Corinthians 12:12-18

This verse is really inspiring because it reminds us that we all belong to one big family. We’re all connected and need each other to thrive. Just like our physical bodies aren’t made up of only one part, it shows us that when one part hurts, the whole body feels it too. It’s a beautiful message about unity and caring for one another.

Reconnect Goals

Always keep in mind, you’re never too far from God’s reach. No matter how distant you feel, you’re never beyond His love. Remember, drift is just temporary, because we serve a God who will always pursue you and welcome you back into His loving arms and protection.

Here are some simple actions you can try and goals to keep in mind that can help you stay closely connected with God and continue to grow in your faith.
