Holding onto our Christian faith can seem like an uphill battle in our fast-paced and increasingly secular world. Romans 12:2 encourages us to not conform to this world’s pattern, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” As Christians, we are called to stand out, to rise above secular influences, and to pray continually to renew our minds.
It is common for religious practices and beliefs to be marginalized in a secular world. Secularism emphasizes worldly pursuits and often disregards spiritual values. It can be difficult for Christians to hold onto their faith when secular influences are so prevalent. We can easily be swayed from our faith by the constant bombardment of materialism and the pursuit of personal success. It is often these influences that challenge our beliefs and tempt us to conform to the patterns of this world.
In such an environment, how do we maintain our faith? Romans 12:2 provides the answer: by not conforming to the world’s patterns and instead being transformed through the renewing of our minds. In order to experience this transformation, we must immerse ourselves in God’s Word and pray for His guidance.
It requires a conscious effort to replace secular thoughts with God’s truths. Philippians 4:8 encourages us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Our thoughts are aligned with God’s will when we focus on these virtues and meditate on Scripture.
Including prayer and Bible reading in your daily routine is another practical tip for spiritual renewal and growth. Focusing on God’s priorities sets a positive tone. Also memorize the Scriptures; having God’s Word in your heart provides strength and encouragement throughout the day. “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful,” Joshua 1:8 (NIV). You can also track your spiritual growth by journaling your thoughts and prayers.
It takes courage and intentionality to live out your faith every day. Be a model of integrity and kindness in the workplace, demonstrating Christ’s love through your work ethic and interactions. Be a positive influence in social settings; be firm in your beliefs, even if they are unpopular, and share your faith when appropriate. By praying together, discussing biblical principles, and modeling Godly behavior, create a Christ-centered home.
Being part of a supportive community makes it easier to maintain a strong faith. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) reminds us, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the day approaching.”
Encouragement, accountability, and belonging are provided by fellowship with like-minded believers. Regularly attending church and participating in small groups fosters meaningful connections with like-minded believers.
We need intentionality, continuous renewal of our minds through Scripture and prayer, and a Christian community to live out our faith in a secular world. These principles can help us navigate secular influences and maintain a vibrant, resilient faith.
