The Life of a Shepherd

The birth of Jesus Christ always conjures up images of shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem receiving the message of the Savior’s arrival. But, what is the life of a shepherd and the significance of a shepherd?

These questions and more are explored in this article. Let’s see what the Bible tells us about sheep and shepherds in Bible.

Plus, discover the role of all Christians to live as shepherds and what that looks like in today’s culture.

What Does the Bible Record About Shepherds?

In the Old Testament, during the time of the Patriarchs, shepherding was highly esteemed. The sons of Issac and Jacob tended flocks, became wealthy, and held status in the culture. (Genesis 30:40,43, Genesis 26:14)

When the children of Israel came to Egypt, the Egyptians despised the shepherding of sheets and goats. The Egyptians were an agricultural/farming kingdom and scorned the lifestyle of tending flocks. (Genesis 46:34)

Move forward to David. He came from the lowliest of trades. He was a shepherd tending the flock. Yet, he would become King of Israel one day and have a heart after God. (1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22)

In Psalm 23:1, God is named the Shepherd, as David calls out, The Lord is my Shepherd.”

On the night of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the angels proclaimed His birth to the Shepherds in the field, not to Kings and nobles. In Luke 2:8-15, the shepherds were told by angelic hosts of the Lord’s birth. They were the first to see the King.

Finally, Jesus declared He is the Good Shepherd in John 10:11, 10:14. Not only is He the Good Shepherd, but He laid down His life as a lamb. (Isaiah 53:7) The perfect sacrifice for all the peoples of the Earth.

What Can We Take Away From All This?

Be thankful and full of prase

We can be thankful and full of praise for Jesus coming for the sinful separated from God. Those who believe in Him are declared blameless and considered God’s children. Make this your mantra to start each day and watch your heart be filled with love and compassion to do the Lord’s work.

Live as a Shepherd

Live your life as a Shepherd. Yes, teachers and pastors serve as shepherds. Yet, all Christians can be inspired to grow a shepherds heart to help and guide others. Meditate on one of the significant passages in Colossians 3:12-17.

“We are to put on the new self, one that lives renewed, bearing with one another, forgiving, loving, peaceful, dwelling in God’s Word, gaining wisdom, caring for others, singing praises, and giving thanks.”

Allow this verse to be a guide toward your shepherding goal.

In closing, care for the sheep around you; cultivate a shepherd’s heart. One that cares and protects others, just as Jesus did.

May you be guided by the Holy Spirit in pursuing your shepherd life.
